1. Choose the transport mode
Ocean freight, through the port of Toamasina, suits large volumes and non-urgent goods. Air freight, through Ivato airport, suits urgent, light or high-value shipments. For small regular volumes, groupage (ocean or air) lowers the cost.
2. Agree on the Incoterm with your supplier
The Incoterm (EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF, DAP…) decides who pays for transport and insurance, and when the risk passes to you. It appears on the invoice and is used to calculate the customs value.
3. Gather the documents
- Detailed commercial invoice (description, quantity, value, Incoterm)
- Packing list consistent with the invoice
- Transport document: bill of lading (B/L) or air waybill (AWB)
- Depending on the product: certificate of origin, health or phytosanitary certificate, specific permits
4. Clear customs
The licensed customs broker files the declaration, customs checks the file and sometimes the goods, duties and taxes are paid and the release is issued. Sending your documents before arrival helps avoid hold-ups.
5. Deliver
After release, the goods are collected at the port, the airport or a bonded warehouse, then delivered to your warehouse.
